ohio state wins again…and other interesting sports events

i hate regional programming with college football games. for some reason, being in south carolina means that games on in my area will rarely include ohio state. someone actually thinks that people here care more about clemson, north carolina, nc state, et. al, than teams up north somewhere. don’t they get that most of us came in here from somewhere else and may not care about those teams? while i’m ranting about things, i would like to slap the person who thought that it would be a brilliant idea to embed an audio/video ad with no mute or stop button in the scoreboard page. ok. rant over.

here’s another reason why XM rules. i actually got to listen to the ohio state game without paying a cent over my plan. the game was actually more dominant for the buckeyes than the final score. the defense was fantastic again. two fumbles in the red zone for the buckeyes prevented a similar shellacking to what usc did against oregon. thanks to wisconsin for defeating michigan.

in saturday’s baseball action —

yankees lose, the yankees lose…and the red sox tie it up in the al east. if i’m a sox fan, my team would make me very nervous. but as i’ve previously pointed out, it is good for the country for the yankees to lose and to miss the playoffs entirely. whatever has to happen for that to take place…i’m in favor of it. well…except for targeted assassinations and kidnapping randy johnson. one has to draw the line somewhere.

the mets win, as if it matters at this point. it’s nice that glavine has started pitching better. i wish he had started this process when it actually meant something. the indians and white sox win also. very impressive collapse in progress by the white sox. if it continues this way, at least they will be spared the embarrassment of imploding in the first round of the playoffs.

the AL has some great races going on right now in all divisions. i’ll write more about that later. i will get to the NL at some point, but the mets are out, so i don’t care quite as much about that.

enjoy the NFL. try not to lose any money or join the fantasy team cult.

TGIF — weekend buzz

–movies–
among the movies to avoid if they are available in your area — the latest from the formerly MIA blonde airhead jenny mccarthy, dirty love. it seems that the bad movies are piling up. the reviewers are already nominating this for a razzie. wow. it might even be worse than deuce bigalow 2. also inexplicable — why they are making cheaper by the dozen 2. if i watched movies more often, it would annoy me that i had to pay so much for this junk hollywood is producing right now. i am also going to ignore corpse bride, the latest by tim burton. i liked big fish, edward scissorhands, and charlie and the chocolate factory, but generally burton’s visions of the world are too creepy for me to watch.

on my radar — oliver twist and proof. i’ve seen the musical oliver and i’ve read the dickens classic. it’s one of my favorite books. i hope that it’s at least as good as the musical.

–the other good stuff–

the attempted militarization of the jetsons–this is an interesting analysis of our modern society vs. the society of the cartoon jetsons. this guy has too much free time. don’t know who they are? link here.

perhaps you have heard the new catchphrase “stuck on stupid” by lt. general honore. there is now a stuck on stupid blog. if that wasn’t cool enough….you can now get t-shirts. God bless capitalists.

officials are miffed that a dog is actually registered to vote in new zealand. to them, i say lighten up. the dog is like a lot of americans in that he has no interest in voting.

that’s all for this post. enjoy your weekend. FYI, my email is down, so if you don’t get a response, that’s why.

galloway is a loon…part II

continuing with galloway v. hitchens…and his insistence that the terrorist attacks were our fault.

hitchens responds to this lunacy:

“It’s also I think a bit much to be told that these al-Qaeda chaps, these killers and sadists and nihilists and profuse of indiscriminant explosions wouldn’t be this way if we weren’t so mean to them. “

right. just be nice to the terrorists and they will go away.

hitchens on the WMDs:

“Now, just on this point of weaponry. Um, if you have, as you do have in the case of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, a regime that has used chemical and biological weapons against some of its own inhabitants in Kurdistan, against Iran, several times…On the basis of this, establishable, provable knowledge, who is going to say, well let’s give Saddam Hussein the benefit of the doubt if he says he’s not fooling around with weapons now. What responsible leader of any democracy could face his people later if that bet turned out to be wrong? And say well I had every reason to think he was on the level. Come on! Get real! Be serious on this!”

this is exactly the point we forget when discussing the WMDs…saddam had WMDs. he used them on his own people, against iran, etc. so, to believe that saddam was on the level when he says he wasn’t trying to get WMD, well, that borders on delusional thinking. also, if saddam wasn’t going anything wrong…shouldn’t he allow the inspectors full access to his facilities to prove that the UK and the US were out to lunch with their accusations? hmm….

on his response to colin powell’s comments about his UN speech:

“I don’t give a damn about what Colin Powell thinks about anything. I never have, and I never will. I think he’s, I’ve noticed that he’s, having being for a long time, the most overrated public figure in the United States. He’s running for the nomination to most overrated man in the world. But I don’t really care…and you can’t make me.”

good one. but hitchens is wrong here. there are quite a few candidates for most overrated public figure in the US before we get to colin powell. the first of those would be our former president bill clinton. to listen to liberals talk about him, he appears somewhat similar to a god. if clinton was still our president, there would be no wars. there would be less poverty. more people would have jobs. the government would save us from evil tax cuts for the rich and the windfall into the US treasury from that extra money would find its way magically into the hands of the poor people. send me a postcard from fantasyland, foolish ones. i hear it’s nice there in the fall.

more on this in future posts.

the moonbat test

i love the term moonbat, but i never knew where exactly it came from. i originally heard it from tony snow on his radio show, but apparently the term pre-dates his use. according to wikipedia, it means someone who is a conspiracy theorist. i would add, someone who is an anti-bush conspiracy theorist. for example, someone who believes that bush planned 9/11 most likely is a moonbat. read wikipedia’s good definition.

i’m not going to steal brilliant posts and claim them as my own. that’s why i’m linking to the right place for a hilarious, comprehensive riff on “you might be a moonbat if…” jeff foxworthy’s bit might be a tad dated but this one isn’t. read it, and if you identify with any of these descriptions, seek immediate help.

the right response to hurricanes

here’s an obvious point. hurricanes happened under the current president’s administration before katrina. granted, none were as severe, but somehow florida survived without much incident. somehow they were able to handle hurricanes, due to the preparation done on the state and local levels. that’s not surprising, considering how much practice floridians have had in dealing with similar situations. however, i’m not excusing FEMA or michael brown at all for hurricane katrina even though governor blanco and mayor nagin totally dropped the ball on their end. brown probably deserved to be fired. he wasn’t really qualified to do that job.

that said, it’s worth pointing out that states like florida and texas have well-thought out plans in case of a hurricane. these plans are implemented on the state and local levels. we didn’t hear about drastic chaos until katrina. this was because cops were on the job and prepared for the scoundrel element thinking about benefiting from human suffering, and people were given instructions and some time to evacuate the area. jeb bush is a smart man. his brother should ask his advice on how to deal with hurricanes or even hire one of jeb’s people to run FEMA. the president couldn’t possibly damage himself any further by this move.

coming up in future posts…more on galloway v. hitchens.

george galloway is a loon…and other obvious truths

fun fun fun. lefty loon and brit MP george galloway defends his radical foreign policy prescriptions and general lunacy against christopher hitchens. there is no question whose side i’m on. not only is galloway a radical nut-case, he’s also a hypocrite on the oil-for-food situation.

the complete transcript is linked below. i’ll just post a few comments here from each combatant and add my own view of them.

galloway:

“You may very well ask, why so many people wanted to come in here and watch and listen to two British guys debating in the United States of America about a war far away. I think the reason is this: our two countries are the biggest rogue states in the world today. And it is therefore vitally important that those who oppose the crimes of our governments, on both sides of the Atlantic, link hands, link arms, stand shoulder to shoulder, until we’ve rid the world of George W. Bush and Anthony Blair, once and for all…”

i think that both sides of the iraq debate want reassurance that they are in fact correct. that’s part of the reason for the curiosity in this debate. he says that the US and the UK are the biggest rogue states in the world today. i guess if you don’t count north korea, syria, or iran, we are in the team picture. there’s a long list of oppressive governments and countries before you get to the US and the UK. he doesn’t take it upon himself to criticize any of these countries.

he considers the war in iraq a crime. if you consider removing saddam from power, freeing iraqis from oppressive baathist rule, moving them toward a stable pro-democracy government, and helping them write a new future in their constitution to be a crime….slap the cuffs on. i don’t feel guilty about this. neither should bush and blair. just to be clear on mr. galloway’s statement…would he be ok with assassinating either of these gentlemen? it sounds suspiciously like that.

more galloway:

“Unless we stop invading and occupying Arab and Muslim countries, then we will be forced to endure the atrocities that took place in New York on 9-11 and in London on 7-7, over and over again. So if I can’t reach your hearts, let me at least reach your heads in your own interests..”

“…in America’s own interests. Revert your policy towards Israel and Palestine, reverse your policy towards dictators in the Muslim world. Reverse your policy towards war and occupation and we can all be safer! ”

it’s all our fault. we did this to ourselves. 9/11 and 7/7 were the result of american imperialism and occupation. what country were we occupying before september 11th? didn’t the US save kuwait from saddam??? i see no evidence of occupation here, yet the terrorists still struck new york.

so the answer, as galloway sees it, is for us to allow rogue governments to remain unchecked? right. that will work. thank God HE’s not PM. but this isn’t about iraq. this is about israel and palestine. the US is a friend of israel…the UK is to a lesser degree. (although it must be noted that the roadmap is blair’s pet project)

more comments will be analyzed in future posts.

porkbusters!

this is such a great idea. get rid of all the wasteful government spending projects now. instapundit has further details on how we can help.

check out the appalling waste at the truth laid bear blog.

citizens against government waste has a database where you can search by state for these pork projects. they suggest $232 billion worth of spending cuts (sorry, tom delay) that can be made to help offset the katrina recovery costs.

let’s hold some feet to the fire here. we should not allow our money to be wasted any longer. it’s time to speak up.

my take on the emmys last night

while i was waiting for my official copy of the snoop dogg translation guide, i got distracted by several things on tv…

the producers of the emmys should be given a ton of credit for not politicizing the event, for keeping the speeches short, and for putting a lid on jon stewart. oh wait…nevermind. ellen’s usually funny…but tonight her writers were out to lunch. they totally fell down on the job. i wanted to laugh at her, but i couldn’t. she must have stolen john kerry’s writers. they weren’t funny either. is it too much to ask that these people slam bush and iraq on their own time?

“emmy idol” was an interesting concept. there is never a bad time to break out old tv theme songs and sing them. i have to say that i enjoyed the “green acres” theme by donald trump and megan mullally. donald trump in overalls is must-see tv. i would have to agree with the style guru who opined that overalls are never a good look for anybody. in all seriousness, i would like to thank the academy for not allowing william shatner to sing. he was much more interesting before he got fat and started doing priceline commercials.

speaking of commercials, that burger king “king” really creeps me out.

conan still has the same bad haircut after all these years. he must have the same stylist as the situation’s willie geist. horrifying. conan got some deserved laughs for his comedy bit during the show. if he was this funny on his own show, perhaps more people would watch. even so, he probably destroys craig ferguson’s show in the ratings.

i hate j.j. abrams, who happens to be the creator of lost and my personal favorite drama alias. the reasons will be explained later. he’s a talented guy, but he has obviously made some bad casting moves with alias. i will have much more on this as the alias season unfolds. jeers to abc for moving it to thursdays.

switching to pro football —

raiders fans are quite scary looking. if you want a society that encourages excessive drinking, possible drug use, and really strange attire choices as a result — these people would be examples of what that society would look like.

in theory, i agree with the idea that the NFL should do something to support the victims of hurricane katrina, but haven’t they suffered enough already? why must we punish them with a bad football game between the saints and the underwhelming new york giants captained by peyton’s brother? just wondering. i also think i would rather give money to the red cross or habitat than to funnel it through former heads of state. but that’s just me.

the president’s speech and the needed revolution

there are those who saw the president’s speech as an air-kiss to the liberal solution of throwing money at problems to cure them. i don’t think this is entirely incorrect. i think that the president will be better off when he realizes that some groups of people are never going to like him. trying to appease the kanye wests, the al sharptons, and the farrikans of the world is misguided and a waste of time. african-americans died in new orleans not because of racism, but because of mismanagement on all levels of government. we saw a lot of video with african-americans as victims of katrina. why was that? it was because there were a disproportionate number of them in that area. racism in this case was a myth and the president should have called out the race-baiters last night. he missed that opportunity.

one opportunity the president and our elected leaders should not miss is the opportunity to explode the concept of the welfare state. its flaws are obvious and glaring in new orleans. we need to encourage people to take personal responsibility for their own future by allowing them to be part of creating something they can take pride in. just re-creating new orleans the way it was before doesn’t fix the problem. we don’t want to keep people struggling and on welfare. if my tax money is going toward this reconstruction, then i want some accountability on where it’s going. we should all demand this.

also, repealing the pork projects in existing bills should be done immediately. we should bring the pressure to bear on our elected officials to do this. this country belongs to us, and it’s about time washington acknowledged this and listened to us for once.
